The inside of the hatband of this hat measures 56.7cm , that is size 7 in UK hat sizes or 7⅛ in the USA
The hat is covered in black silk plush, which is in generally good condition. It has rubbed in two places around the rim of the crown (see images).
I believe this hat was used by a coachman - there is a small hole and a circular mark on the lining where a cockade was once attached.
The front of the brim is also slightly twisted - probably from frequent "doffing".
The hat has its original black felt band
The black fabric on the underside of the rim is also rubbed in places
Inside the hat is lined in cream silk, it is stamped "Moss Bros, Covent Garden, The Complete Men's Store" - this company appear in the Dundee Directory of 1886-7.
It has a tan leather hatband, with the remains of a white / cream coloured coating
This hat could be worn as it is for driving or sidesaddle classes etc, or it could be fully restored for formal wear.
