This large steel gig bit is stamped "Merry" & "St.James". There are records of Merry & Co (Saddlemakers) in the London Metropolitan Archives between 1883 and 1951
It has a port with a single cherry roller.
The post is stamped "L" and "S.M.L.", I suspect this is the mark of Latchford of St Martins Lane (the writer of "The Loriner"), who probably made the bit.
The cheeks cannot rotate but can slide, each cheek has two rein slots so that the leverage on the curb is adjustable.
The original 19th Century curb hooks are still present.
