An antique burnished steel bit with a good patina.
There is a low port in the mouthpiece.
One of the fixed cheeks is stamped "Bedford & Ra...", the other "Laurie". Laurie, Bedford and Rand were a company of saddlers and harness makers in Oxford Street, London. Their business closed in 1855.
The bit has its original hooks. There are traces of black over the surface of the bit - it was probably japanned or covered in black enamel. Japanning was a technique used to prevent steel rusting.
