A 1914 Vicolette Military Elbow or Portsmouth Bit - Sold
This is an old military Portsmouth or Elbow horse bit
It is made of a nickel alloy called "Vicolette" - this has cracked at one end of the mouthpiece - please look at the images.
This design was used by the military because it was a "universal" bit - the reversible mouthpiece and choice of rein slots made it suitable for many different horses.
It has a half-twisted or reversible mouthpiece with a low port.
Each cheek has two slots for the curb rein.
One cheek is stamped "Heal Bros Ltd., 1914".
The other cheek is stamped with a broad arrow or ordnance mark and "M" as well as "Vicolette".
The bit still has its original curb chain and hook.
This bit is not suitable for use, the mouthpiece is cracked and appears to have a resin repair.
It has quite a few scratches and dings from use, and a new owner may wish to polish it up.
