A Pair of Steel Cage Stirrups c.1890

These stirrups are beautifully made in steel.
Each has three bars curving over its front.
These would prevent the foot from getting trapped in the stirrup and thereby stop the rider from being dragged in the even of a fall.
The undersides are stamped "Carter" & "Edinburgh".
J. Carter was a saddler and harness maker at 86, George Street, Edinburgh in the late 19th Century.
He registered various patents including one for a safety stirrup.
He won a gold medal at Edinburgh International Exhibition in 1890
