A Large Sidesaddle Stirrup Iron by Latchford

This is a steel side-saddle safety stirrup.
It is much larger than most similar examples, and could even fit a modern boot.

The stirrup has a swinging inner arch and two part tread that separates to release the foot in the event of a fall so that the rider cannot be dragged.
The inner arch is covered in leather. The tread is solid, curved at its front edge and stamped "FRONT" on the underside of the curved part - if fitted the wrong way round the escape mechanism would not work.
The underside of the central part of the footplate or tread is stamped " Patent, Latchford, St Martins Lane, London".

Benjamin Latchford was one of the authors of "The Loriner" published in 1871.

Dimensions : External Width 5¾" (14.8cm), height 9¼" (23.5cm), depth of tread 3" (7.8cm)
Weight : 772g (1lb 11¼oz )
