This canteen has a mahogany coloured leather case with a good patina.
The case has a shoulder strap and belt loops.
It closes with a finely stitched leather covered buckle.
It is lined in cream doeskin or chamois which has darkened with age.
Inside there is a rectangular flask, with a silver captured or hinged cap.
The top of the cap is engraved "J.C.M."
This is hallmarked London 1885 and has the silversmith's mark "W.T." - William Thornhill.
The flask has a silver plated cup, the plating is worn in places, the base of the cup is stamped "Thornhill & Co., 144 Bond Street, London"
There would originally have been a sandwich case, but this is missing.
