A large tan coloured leather case, curved to fit neatly against the body.
The leather has a good aged patina.
The lid is stamped "Major Durham Matthews, Clonsilla Grange".
Major John Durham Matthews was born c.1879 in County Cork, Ireland and had a long military career.
Clonsilla is a suburb of Dublin, Clonsilla Grange no longer exists, the last reference I can find to it is a directory of 1927.
The case is in cream doeskin and has an internal partition. The lining is in good condition, there is a dark mark where the top of the flask has touched it.
Inside there is a curved glass flask, with a plated bayonet or captured cap. This is stamped "Swaine & Adeney, London".
There is also a curved sandwich tin, with a gilt washed interior also stamped "Swaine & Adeney, London".
In Swaine's 1933 catalogue these cost 9 pounds and 9 shillings - depending on which index used that would be around £1800 today.
Dimensions of case 8¾" (22cm) wide x 6¾" (17cm) tall x 2" (5cm) deep
Weight : 3lb 7oz (1.55kg)
