17th / 18th Century Curb Bit - Sold

An identical bit to this can be seen in the Civic Museum of Modena.
It is made of steel
. The mouthpiece consists of two conical cannons, which taper to a central join.
Part of one of the loops of the join is missing so the canons can separate - they could be held in place with a little adhesive without damaging the bit.
The wide ends of the mouthpiece have ridges in them, almost resembling the knuckles of a hand. The cheeks are fixed and cannot turn.
The medium length shanks are curved with scrolling pieces extending downwards from the mouthpiece.
There is a straight shackle bar and one rein loop remains at the end of one of the cheeks.

Dimensions : Mouthpiece 5" (12.5cm), Cheek length 7¾" (20cm)
Weight : 478g (1lb 1oz)
