This elegant bit is made of steel.
The lower parts of its fine cheeks open out into balloon shapes - in Latchford's catalogue this is described as a balloon bit.
The mouthpiece has a low port.
Both cheeks are stamped "Peat".
Peat, Saddler & Harness Maker, 173 Piccadilly, London held a Royal warrant & was mentioned in Dickens’ 1879 directory.
The Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice ordered the sale of the business and the leasehold on 16 July 1884 following a court case brought by Latchford - presumably over a debt to the loriner.
The bit has one original curb hook.
It is in good condition with some light surface oxidation that could be polished off.
