This antique steel bit has swinging cheeks which can move through 90 degrees, and a Segundo mouthpiece.
Don Juan de Segundo designed several mouthpieces and described and illustrated them in "A Treatise on the Bitting of Horses", part of Benjamin Latchford's 1885 book, "The Loriner".
The cheeks of the bit are stamped "Latchford", "St Martins Lane", Patent & "3" (the cheek design).
The port is stamped, but the stamp is illegible, other similar examples are stamped "patent" twice with a coat of arms between.
The bit still has its original curb hooks and rein rings.

cheek length ( not including curb rein rings) 6¾" (17cm)
