A Vintage Hampson & Scott Safety Stirrup

The stirrup has a swinging tread and arch that splits open to release the foot in the event of a fall so that the rider cannot be dragged.
It has a solid tread, curved at its front edge - if fitted the wrong way round the escape mechanism would not work.
This stirrup was well-used, the tread has worn smooth and somewhat thinner on its front edge on one side.
The underside of the footplate or tread is stamped "Gold Medal London", "Scott's Improved Patent", "Hampson & Scott Makers",
with the trademark "H & S", "Size 3", "Solid Nickel" and "233"
