An old steel bit with quite a dark aged patina and a slightly pitted but stable surface. It has tear shaped cheeks with "spoon" sections to stop them being pulled through the horse's mouth.
The cheeks are divided with a hanging section to attach to the headstall on the top. Two horizontal bars form a middle section which holds the mouthpieces.
Each of the thin curved or mullen mouthpieces has a turning attachment to one cheek which passes through the horizontal slot in the other cheek so that it can slide and rotate. This free end carries a rein ring.
