This bit has a mullen mouthpiece. In the centre of the mouthpiece there is a two-lobed piece of flat metal which can rotate around the mouthpiece. This plate would have stopped a horse from putting its tongue over the bit.
The mouthpiece is attached to a central bar in the turning bit rings
