Antique Carved Latin American Stirrup - Estribo de Babucha - Stirrup404
These enclosed stirrups are known in Spanish as "Estribos de caja" or "Box stirrups", they were developed for use in rough terrains and moutainous regions as protection against injury and cold.
This is an old and heavy example carved from a single piece of pale wood .
The outer surface is carved with intricate decoration, some of which chipped off on the rear edge. The curleded toe of the stirrup is gives it the name "Estribo de Babucha" or "Slipper stirrup" although this can lead to some confusion with sidesaddle slipper stirrups
It has iron band around its centre which holds a suspension loop with a roller.
There is an old quite clumsy repair to the iron band on the base of the stirrup, this could be replaced to allow the stirrup to sit flat
